Choosing a quality substrate is an essential part of a nature aquarium as it provides vital nutrients for lush plant growth and helps balance water properties by decreasing the hardness/pH to optimal levels for aquatic plants, shrimp, and most tropical fish.
Originating in Japan, Ultum Nature Systems x Marfied Controsoil consists of high-quality natural soil and volcanic ash. It’s common for competing substrates to cause ammonia levels to spike. While this helps “jump start” a tank and promotes plant growth; it is toxic to livestock and can cause unsightly algae during initial stages of an aquarium set up. Controsoil provides the perfect level of nutrients without excess. Many have successfully added livestock within the first 24 hours of a newly set up tank with this substrate without worry. We do however suggest making sure that ammonia and nitrites are eliminated before adding livestock.
Controsoil is available in various granule sizes and colors to accommodate user preference and aquatic plant choice.
United StatesThis was pretty cool as it barely raised the ammonia, it was prewashed and made for quick use, and the brown color is really nice. My plants are thriving with it. The shipping was quick and efficient too.

United StatesShipping wasn't too long and before I knew it the Controlsoil was delivered. I had a 5 gallon tank that had some Anubia Nana glued to some rocks and was keeping them as quarantine. So far since I have put new substrate in the plants are doing better and I just tested the water parameter this morning. Nothing is amiss aside from a 40 ppm Nitrate but thats probably due to a half root tab I had put in previously. I love how when putting the new substrate in there was not much cloudy water it was only for a slight bit and after about 3-4 hours the water was clear again! I would come back and buy again when I get the chance for some new tanks!
